Do you know, what gunships are? Gunships are attack helicopters used to provide support for the ground troops. Gunships first appeared in World war II. The appearance of gunships reshaped the battlefield drastically. Ground troops now have air support, troop transportation is easier. The world has only seen 27 different types of gunships. Deciding 10 was difficult. Here goes the list;
10. Mil Mi-24 Hind:
Is a Russian attack helicopter with low troop transport capacity. The Hind is being used by the Russian Air Force along with more than 30 others. Although its production has been ceased since 1991, it still remains operational.
09. CAICCAIC Z-10:
The Z-10 is a Chinese attack helicopter. It was primarily designed for anti-armor warfare. It has air to air capabilities as well. The Z-10 has earned the nickname of “Fierce Thunderbolt”.
08. Denel AH-2 Rooivalk:
The AH-2 is a South African attack helicopter. Rooivalk translates to “Red Kestrel“. It can carry a wide range of weapons depending on the need of the mission. Its primary use is the Russian Air Force.
07. Agusta A129 Mangusta:
The A129 is a two-seat, twin-engined, lightweight battlefield helicopter. It was developed with the sole purpose of being in the anti-armor attack role. When this beast flies, beware tanks!
06. Eurocopter Tiger:
The Tiger is an attack helicopter with four blades and, twin engines. The tiger is equipped with stealth technology and, two MTU Turbomeca Rolls-Royce MTR390 turboshaft engines. It is one of the most advanced gunships out there. Its primary users are the French, Australian, German and, Spanish army.
05. AH-1Z Viper:
The Viper is an antecedent of the SuperCobra. It is an American twin-engine attack helicopter. It has another name. It is known as the “Zulu Cobra” too. It features a four-blade, bearingless, composite main rotor system, uprated transmission, and a new target sighting system. It’s used in the US Marine Corps.
04. MI-28H Havoc:
The Mi-28 all-weather, day-night, military tandem, two-seat anti-armor attack helicopter. This Russian gunship is equipped with anti-tank guided missiles. The Russian, Algerian and, Iraqi air forces are its primary users.
03. Boeing AH-64D Longbow Apache:
The AH-64D is an American attack helicopter. This gunship has four-blades, twin-turboshaft with a tailwheel-type landing gear arrangement. The Longbow is known to be the most powerful anti-armor weapon system in the Gulf War.
02. Kamov Ka-52 Hokum-B:
The Ka-52 is an upgraded and a two-seater version of the famous Ka-50. The Hokum-B is a next generation multi-role, attack helicopter. This Russian gunship is one fastest of the most maneuverable, all-weather helicopters. This agile and lethal beast is also known as “Alligator”. Well, can’t complain about that.
01. Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian:
The AH-64E is an upgraded version of the AH-64A. The 64A was developed to replace the AH-1 Cobra. The Guardian showed its capabilities during some recent wars. This gunship can fire Hellfire 2 in fire-and-forget mode. Hellfire 2 is an anti-tank guided missile. The Guardian the most advanced out there. When the Guardian enters the battlefield, be aware of its wrath.
